The Shabby Road Orchestra is an orchestrated, 12-piece, ad-hoc Minneapolis rock collective, first organized in 2017, dedicated to intermittent shows recreating the iconic Beatles studio years albums note-for-note with original instruments and sound effects on the year of their 50th anniversary. The show is a celebration of the music, first and last, with no accents, wigs or impersonations.
Previous sold-out performances include 18- and 31-piece performances of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and Magical Mystery Tour in 2017, and 15-piece performances of The White Album in 2018.
September 26, 2019 will mark the 50th anniversary of the Beatles final recording (if not release), Abbey Road. A delirious 17-song collage of immortal and enduring songwriting and studio rock production, it reunited the band with producer George Martin and with each other, repairing the wounds of the difficult Let it Be sessions (the album was tied up in post-production), and concluded with a spontaneous rooftop concert with keyboardist Billy Preston for lunch hour pedestrians in central London. It includes pop masterpieces (“Something”), show music (“Octopus’s Garden,” “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer”), soul (“Oh! Darling”), 8 minutes of the searing Delta blues (“I Want You/“She’s So Heavy’), and concludes with an 8-song, 15-minute medley that is the defining conclusion to the band’s remarkable career. Abbey Road has sold 7 million copies in the US and 31 million copies worldwide, and is known song-by-song to every person fan of the rock catalog.
To mark the anniversary, The Shabby Road Orchestra will play the album start to finish, including little-heard B-sides of 1969 (“The Ballad of John & Yoko,” “Don’t Let Me Down,” “Old Brown Shoe”, then return with a second set of deep cuts and standouts from the 1967 and 1968 albums Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour and The White Album.
